Building on findings from our new report Essential Educators: Teacher and Parent Views on COVID-19, Interim Co-President and Director of Research David Schleifer describes how schools can not only be sites for civic education, but can also implement democratic practices that include teachers in decision-making. The op-ed, published March 24, 2021, emphasizes the importance of including teachers’ voices to both improve how schools function and to build civic muscle.

Schleifer’s piece is the second in a series of articles to publish in The Fulcrum through a new relationship with the media platform that covers ways to improve American democracy.
