Nearly all of the coal consumed in the United States is used for generating electricity, and coal generates close to half of all the electricity in the U.S. So it’s safe to say the two pretty much go hand-in-hand. The other half of our electricity draws on a variety of sources: natural gas, petroleum, nuclear energy, hydroelectric and other renewable energy.
