Beeville, Texas
Beeville is the county seat of Bee County, Texas, it is named after Barnard E. Bee, Sr., who served as Secretary of State for the Republic of Texas. The population of the town increased exponentially with both the opening of the railroad in 1886 and the Texas oil boom in the 1920s. During world World War Two the United States Navy operated the Beeville Naval Air Station, which trained Navy pilots from 1943 to 1946. The base was reopened in 1952 as NAS Chase Field, continuing in operation through 1992. The economy today is centered on county government, oilfield services, and agribusiness.
In the 2000 U.S. census the town's population was 13,129 people. The population is majority Hispanic with 67.67% of the population identified as Hispanic or Latino. The 2004 census reported that the median income for a household in the city was $25,475 (compared to $41,645 statewide). About 26.5% of families and 30.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 40.8% of those under age 18 and 24.4% of those aged 65 or over.
