Capital Community College (CCC) was formed in formed in 1992, by a legislatively mandated merger of Greater Hartford Community College (founded in 1967) and Hartford State Technical College (founded as the Connecticut Engineering Institute in 1946). The amalgamated colleges have enrolled about 239,500 students since 1969. In the fall 2006 the school had 3550 students.

In 2002, Capital Community College (CCC) moved to a state of the art facility in the central business district of Hartford, Conn. The former G. Fox Department Store was the subject of a 70 million dollar top-to-bottom gut renovation. The downtown landmark fitted with high-tech telecommunications systems (while care was taken to preserve and highlight the historic features). The new location offers better accessibility to city residents and downtown workers, and heightens the college's visibility with government leaders and the business community.

The college is approximately 38 percent African American and 28 percent Hispanic. Despite this diversity in the student population there is concern that the school (at 72 percent) is overwhelmingly female. In recent years there has been a renewed effort to attract more men (especially from minority groups) to CCC's programs.
