A Supreme Court justice, says President Obama, should "know how the world works and how ordinary people live." His nominee is federal judge Sonia Sotomayor, who grew up in a Bronx housing project. She'd be the first Hispanic and the third woman to sit on the Supreme Court. A recent Gallup poll suggests race and gender don't loom large on the radar for the public as a whole: 68 percent said it doesn't matter if a Hispanic is nominated; 74 percent said it doesn't matter if an African-American is nominated; and 64 percent said it doesn't matter if a woman is nominated..
