Talk It Over: Education

Should Affirmative Action Be Banned?

By Talitha on February 8, 2009

Affirmative action is a program designed to benefit women and minorities in different areas of livelihood based on the history of their people.

What exactly does it have to offer? Well, as far as I know, it offers scholarships to minorities and women who are "underrepresented" in colleges. Minorities are categorized as being African-American, Asian-American, Hispanic and Latino, Native American, or women; however, there is an extended definition of a minority as the actions and characteristics of LGBT's (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transsexual) and left-handed people are questioned by today's society as being "out of the norm."

There are hundreds, if not thousands of scholarships nationwide, and a minority need only find the perfect one that fits his/her description. Being a female minority myself, I should be happy to have the "guaranteed" benefits of getting a scholarship, right? But what about the white males who are excluded from the so-called "equal rights and privileges" that affirmative action has to offer? Why have they been excluded?
The efforts of Boston University to offer an all-white-male scholarship sparked resentment between the white and minority communities. Creators of the satirical scholarship tried to argue and prove the absurdity and unfair nature of scholarships based on race.

I may never be able to give a definite answer as to why affirmative action isn't available for white men, but I have found out that there's a growing trend of states taking the initiative to ban affirmative action; states like California and Washington. Michigan followed shortly afterward, but found that there was a significant drop in minority admission rates in their colleges and universities. The solution was to create "reach-out" programs and launch “mass recruiting” that would inevitably attract minorities back to colleges – a task they would have originally assumed to promote diversity within their establishments.

Tell me, why ban affirmative action if the same process and trouble of “recruiting” and “reaching-out” will take place?” At the same time, why keep affirmative action if the minority and white communities constantly bicker about the availability and nature of college scholarships? The most logical solution I see is simply to reform affirmative action in favor of everyone, this time including white males. Besides, scholarships should not be based on either race or gender, but based on merits – after all, the root word “scholar” is there for a reason.

America is a nation that lives by the principle of “all men are created equal” and, by extension, the concept of “equal rights and privileges.” We must all do our best to uphold those beliefs in order to make a significant growth in society.

Affirmative action by any name, shouldn't be banned. It's written in the amendments, and who can better describe your situation to have a benefitial outcome, other than you?

How can a person be picked or chosen when the funds are problem not getting there. Its not getting into the schools which is the important part but the staying and being financially disabled to pay for tuition. The people who get into schools are not dumb, stupid or academically challenge its mostly economical. Affirmative Action is thee adjustments for the wrongs America caused a long time ago, but effects so many today. Its unbelievable that some many people who are not even effected by Affirmative Action are the ones complaining about it the most. Each individual that argues differently says one thing about themselves they have problems with the beneficial parties of Affirmative Action. Its a small percentage of the schools admission process not a large number. So if a person feels that they didn't get into a college because the affirmative action student took it maybe because they couldn't get in anyhow. Face it your the ones that are the idiots. You look at the records of your school and ask them why help those that can't help themselves, when you can clearly help yourself. It should be easy to point the finger like a child and say he did it but not this time, America fails when they break the agreements they made to my grandfathers not really my dad actually. It was just over 40 plus years ago. Food for thought to those so called believers of the unfairness of America's make up to the minorities, America has been USA since 1780's and Slavery into this part of the World has been occurring since the late 1400's according to my History Books. So make up for that. And it was minorities they enslaved but the majority were blacks and it is still unfair to enslave a people and offer them college thats not free. So I don't know whats on the minds of humans who claim "All men are created equal" is pure insanity, to believe. We were born into a society that made laws that made 3/5ths compromise... Wake Up America Really its not FAIR to binge on taking advantage of the under privileged give them there Affirmative Action which isn't really what the people who voted against it. Guess What Wake up America now and maybe God will consider to make America better. But your illness is prolonging a governmental depression. Give it some thought before you confirm your affirmations.

I would be in full support of any bill that funds the tuition of any freed slave in America. The irony is that there aren't any freed slaves around. You are correct in saying that all men are created equal, that is in fact the essence of America. However, equal opportuinity does not mean equal results. Just because your ancestors were enslaved, does not mean that you are entitled to reparations. If you want money, get off your lazy bum and get a job. Affirmative Action is another form of welfare designed to keep you feeling like you are incapable of getting into college yourself. You should take some pride in yourself and EARN your path in this country. Nobody is "keeping you down." Whitey is not always out to get you, get over that slavery excuse crap and you will hopefully be able to find a sense of accomplishment in making something for yourself instead of always waiting for the free handout. Success comes to those who earn it through blood, sweat, tears, and intuition. Not to those who rely on everyone else to give it to them.

Affirmative action in of itself sounds like a pro racially motivated law. For any minority or person with a dissability; affirmative action is an automatic statement that says a person only fits "Socially and Economically," in a certain sector of society and should stay there by societies, (meaning rich White Ruplican or Democrat, or Celebrity status), standards. Affirmative action is much like the the Mc Carthy Blacklisting of the Forties and Fifties. Today, however, our society should've learned from these experiences of social degradation of our own history and be prepared to move socially and economically beyond the confines of Dark Age political dogma and religious stipulations for governing our schools, families, and social structures.

I agree with one thing in Affirmative Action; our education system needs to be regulated and fixed, DRASTICALLY, but telling a Mexican child that they only qualify to attend a certain school or district and should stay witjh in their own community is proposterous and racist.
I have dissablilties, but I don't care. I am in College and working hard and doing my best to get through school.
The public needs to quit making excuses and quit grpping and complaining and get involved more directly with their local governments, and their state governments, and make the changes in our laws that will give ALL people their due equal rights under the constitution.
By the way, we shouldn't need the Constitution to remind us that we all are endowed with Hunam Civil Rights.
