Talk It Over: Education

Should Affirmative Action Be Banned?

By Talitha on February 8, 2009

Affirmative action is a program designed to benefit women and minorities in different areas of livelihood based on the history of their people.

What exactly does it have to offer? Well, as far as I know, it offers scholarships to minorities and women who are "underrepresented" in colleges. Minorities are categorized as being African-American, Asian-American, Hispanic and Latino, Native American, or women; however, there is an extended definition of a minority as the actions and characteristics of LGBT's (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transsexual) and left-handed people are questioned by today's society as being "out of the norm."

There are hundreds, if not thousands of scholarships nationwide, and a minority need only find the perfect one that fits his/her description. Being a female minority myself, I should be happy to have the "guaranteed" benefits of getting a scholarship, right? But what about the white males who are excluded from the so-called "equal rights and privileges" that affirmative action has to offer? Why have they been excluded?
The efforts of Boston University to offer an all-white-male scholarship sparked resentment between the white and minority communities. Creators of the satirical scholarship tried to argue and prove the absurdity and unfair nature of scholarships based on race.

I may never be able to give a definite answer as to why affirmative action isn't available for white men, but I have found out that there's a growing trend of states taking the initiative to ban affirmative action; states like California and Washington. Michigan followed shortly afterward, but found that there was a significant drop in minority admission rates in their colleges and universities. The solution was to create "reach-out" programs and launch “mass recruiting” that would inevitably attract minorities back to colleges – a task they would have originally assumed to promote diversity within their establishments.

Tell me, why ban affirmative action if the same process and trouble of “recruiting” and “reaching-out” will take place?” At the same time, why keep affirmative action if the minority and white communities constantly bicker about the availability and nature of college scholarships? The most logical solution I see is simply to reform affirmative action in favor of everyone, this time including white males. Besides, scholarships should not be based on either race or gender, but based on merits – after all, the root word “scholar” is there for a reason.

America is a nation that lives by the principle of “all men are created equal” and, by extension, the concept of “equal rights and privileges.” We must all do our best to uphold those beliefs in order to make a significant growth in society.
