Only one-quarter of Americans say minority representation in higher education would decline without affirmative action

Public Agenda helps communities and the nation
solve tough problems through:
Research that illuminates people's views & values;
Engagement that gets people talking, learning from each other and working together on solutions; and
Communications that spreads the word and builds momentum for change.
By doing so, we seek to contribute to a democracy in which problem-solving triumphs over gridlock and inertia, and where public policy reflects the deliberations and values of the citizenry.
Public Agenda is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization. You can find out more about us in our What We Do and Frequently Asked Questions pages.

This post was written for the 20 community colleges participating in Completion by Design, a five-year Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation initiative that aims to significantly increase completion rates for low-income students under 26. As a “National Assistance partner” for Completion by Design, Public Agenda provides direct assistance to the colleges to help them build capacity for solutions-oriented dialogue among faculty, staff and administration. Here, Public Agenda's Alison Kadlec discusses best practices for authentic internal stakeholder engagement. While the post is geared toward Completion by Design planning teams, the principles are useful for any authentic engagement process.

Far too often, throughout our work in the education field, we've seen even the most earnest and promising ideas from experts and reformers for improving schools and ramping up student learning met with confusion, anxiety or even anger from teachers, parents, students or community members.

2011 Public Agenda
There is only one way to find out. If you eliminate the question on the entrance applications and examinations, you will know the answer. The greater the stress on diversity, the less chance of determining when equality is achieved. I have more respect for minority groups that offer monitary and emotional support to their own than I do those that stress forced diversity. I do not believe that true equality can ever be achieved by discriminating for or against any particular group. If we continue on our current path, we are trying to solve our problem by imposing more of the same problem. Racism against whites is as intolerable as it is against any other group. Yet, there are those that still want to force the round peg in the square hole. They look for inequality and in doing so they find it. When will the words of Dr. King be relevant?
I see the subject of racism every day in many forms and from all walks of life. I think Ralphie Mae said it best when he said he can not stand "blank-Americans". And I agree with that whole heartedly. It is one thing to chrish your heritage and pay homage to your ancestors, but to insist on being called anything but AMERICAN is just ludacris. Hispanic-American, Asian-American, African-American. Any form of Blank-American is just segregation in the new Milennia. Segregation was wrong then and its wrong now. The only way we will acheive the abolishment of racism is to abolish the groups that promote it. NAACP stands for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Shouldn't it be the NAAAP? the National Association for the Advancement of All People? Why does it have to be defined by race or color? Why can't we all just be Americans? Why can't we all just be people? Why does it have to be Blank-Americans or Colored People? Can anyone answer this question?
You are so rigfht. If you don't want to support American go back to "blank".
Well duh...the minorities are the only people who need organizations such as the NAACP. Ya'll don't discriminate against your own kind, now do you?!?! Let's ask smart questions, people! :)
