Majorities support doctor-assisted suicide for the terminally ill, but responses can vary depending on how the question is worded

Public Agenda helps communities and the nation
solve tough problems through:
Research that illuminates people's views & values;
Engagement that gets people talking, learning from each other and working together on solutions; and
Communications that spreads the word and builds momentum for change.
By doing so, we seek to contribute to a democracy in which problem-solving triumphs over gridlock and inertia, and where public policy reflects the deliberations and values of the citizenry.
Public Agenda is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization. You can find out more about us in our What We Do and Frequently Asked Questions pages.

This post was written for the 20 community colleges participating in Completion by Design, a five-year Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation initiative that aims to significantly increase completion rates for low-income students under 26. As a “National Assistance partner” for Completion by Design, Public Agenda provides direct assistance to the colleges to help them build capacity for solutions-oriented dialogue among faculty, staff and administration. Here, Public Agenda's Alison Kadlec discusses best practices for authentic internal stakeholder engagement. While the post is geared toward Completion by Design planning teams, the principles are useful for any authentic engagement process.

Far too often, throughout our work in the education field, we've seen even the most earnest and promising ideas from experts and reformers for improving schools and ramping up student learning met with confusion, anxiety or even anger from teachers, parents, students or community members.

2011 Public Agenda
first of all if a person had a disease where it destroyed their mind there is no way they could even ask for death, just because a person has a disease it does not mean they are dying, and no there might be something important that the person needs to see about life before they pass away.
if a person wants to die they have the right, wether they do it themselves or with the help of someone they trust in
Okay 'first off' a person with a terminal illness, not disease. and they will be dyingg!! HENSE; teminal: Causing, ending in, or approaching death; fatal. and if they do destroy their minds they will have some time to think about it before they go COOKOO, so they will have time to do what they want before they kill themselves, and if they want they could just die right away if their that depressed. :P
Those that oppose assisted suicide I feel have not been exposed to someone close to them who wish to die as opposed to suffering an incurable disease. Granted, if they are incompetent in mind and body they cannot make a rational decision, however, the decision or even the discussion more than likely has been discussed in depth with family and clinical/medical/financial professionals. Speaking for myself, I have seen enough of respiratory problems to make me begin to fill out paperwork to include me in the pro-choice category of ending my life. The quality of life I choose makes more sense to me than being in a state of being cared for by others. When there is no hope I would not want to burden my family with my life and I want to go at my hand if at all possible again, to spare my family. Why wait to make the decision until I am no longer able to make the decision? What is the point in living when it is not really living that I am doing?
I believe that people having brain damaging dieases should be able to make teh choice to end their lives, beacause of the fact their brain is damaged. The disease could be making their descion for them. If the person was in pain I wouldnt know beacuse me, I believe in God nd murder and suicide is against God. But i wouldnt want someone to be in pain either. I believe a miracle could happen and they might be healed. It might be a long shot but you never whats happen tomarrow or in the furture
We think in generalities, but we live in detail.
it should be their choice if they want it then they should do what they believe. some people would rather not put up with a disease and they would rather not suffer. they would probibly want to do whats best for them. i personally wouldnt want to deal with a disease especially if it is a flesh eating disease. so i am for it.
if suicide isnt a crime, then why should helping someone, especially if they are ill, be a crime
