Is There Still Time on Global Warming?
James Hansen, the NASA scientist who first raised the alarm on global warming 20 years ago, will testify before Congress today to say there's still time to control climate change -- barely. In addition to pushing for air pollution reduction and more use of alternative fuels, Hansen suggests establishing a nationwide grid for storing and distributing electricity to allow large-scale use of energy from renewable sources such as solar power and wind turbines.
Surveys show nearly three-quarters of Americans say they believe in the theory of global warming and seven in 10 Americans say they're at least "somewhat" worried about it, but it is low on their list of environmental concerns. And most people think international cooperation can make a difference.
