Summer: A Time To Learn, A Time To Grow

For many parents, that's both a question and a hope for their children, and to help those who are looking for programs to give children a chance to learn over the summer, Summer Learning Day was celebrated coast to coast this year on June 21. The purpose – putting a spotlight on programs that are available in various areas – fits well with one of our recent surveys, "A Time To Learn, A Time To Grow: California Parents Talk About Summertime And Summer Programs," in which we found a gap between what parents want for their children during the summer and the activities in which their children were able to participate. Majorities of parents said it is important for their child to partake in a variety of activities during the summer, including academics. But six out of ten said they either did not enroll at least one school-aged child in any summer program in 2009, or did so for less than half of the summer.
